Fontenelle Forest is a great place to satisfy your child's sense of adventure!
When my kids and I recently visited the forest on an early-spring day, we experienced nature just beginning to wake up from the long, cold winter. It's a wonderful feeling to step out of the city for a day and surround yourself with the fresh air and serenity of such an un-touched place.
Although Fontenelle is in Bellevue, the drive from West Omaha was quick and easy. We loaded up our sack lunches and set out to the forest ready for an adventure.
On this particular visit, our mission was the Hands-on-Habitat event. All three of my kids fit in to the target age range (0-5), so this event felt tailor-made for us.
The activities started off self-led. We loved exploring station after station without constraint. We made tissue paper trees and wiggly worms with pipe cleaners, explored life cycles and sprouts, and even played on the indoor playground!
After our indoor discovery time, we ventured outdoors for a guided hike on the boardwalk. The boardwalk stretches over a mile long and gives strollers and wheelchairs the rare opportunity to dive deeper into the forest. Hands-on-Habitat received rave reviews from my kids, and I'm sure we'll head back soon.
Even without an event, the Forest has a lot to offer families. With over 19 miles of marked trails and 1,400 acres of conservation land, you can return time and time again for a brand new experience. And, with every season comes new plants, animals, and especially birds to explore!
For those of us who aren't especially knowledgable in these things, the Fontenelle staff more than compensates. In all their guided hikes, summer camps, pre-school classes, clubs and bird demonstrations, you'll find an expert who is passionate about excited to share their knowledge with others.
Between the people and the forest, I've found that Fontenelle is a very special place.
Out with Sprout Membership Month!

About Rachel Santo
Rachel grew up, met her husband and fell in love in Omaha. Now with a family of her own, she and her husband enjoy getting out and experiencing Omaha in a whole new way; with their kids. The Santo crew consists of Lyla, Wesley, Levi and a new little one arriving in April! As a homeschool family, their flexible schedule allows them to explore Omaha and its offerings throughout the day. Out with Sprout was born from a desire to share those findings with others and enjoy new adventures together along the way.
