From its rich history to its modern day purpose, The Rose Theater is full of stories to tell.

When its doors first opened in 1927, its purpose was to showcase fully-orchestrated song and dance acts, vaudeville skits, and feature films. The ornately decorated building was perfect for those special nights out on the town. Over the years, the theater fell victim to many changing fads and was even used as a bowling ally for a time. But finally, in 1981 Rose Blumpkin rescued the building and signed the deed over to the trustworthy hands of The Omaha Theater Company for Young People. Omahans once again had the opportunity to enjoy a special night out with live theater at The Rose!

The Rose Theater offers a wonderful season of shows to be enjoyed by children of all ages and interests. It also has camps and classes for those who want to reach beyond the audience.

I was able to take my 4 year-old son to see "Jackie & Me" just a couple of months ago. It was one of those mother-son date nights that always seem to be the most special. I knew the baseball theme was enough to spark his interest. That, and the pure delight of a night out with mom that excluded his siblings.

The whole night was special. From getting dressed up, to holding his own ticket, my son was beaming! During the show, he was mesmerized, but in a way that's different from watching TV. I could see him inspecting the set and the facial expressions of the characters. His mind was engaged as he was taking it all in.

After the show, the cast offered to stay and answer questions and my son excitedly threw up his hand with a question. When they finally called on him, all he could muster was, "I liked the show!". It wasn’t exactly a question, but I was still so proud of him. Then we made our way upstairs for autographs from the cast. Taking a picture with "Jackie Robinson" was the cherry on top of his perfect night.

The Rose is unlike any other venue we typically enjoy as a family. That makes it all the more memorable. I'm excited to continue this date-night tradition with my other kids. With the newly announced season, I'm going to have a hard time not seeing them all!
