I remember when I was little, Halloween was such a fun and exciting day. For the entire month of October, we would try to come up with a unique idea for our Halloween costume, because they were always homemade. I remember being Miss America with a homemade sash made by my Mom, a roller skating girl (although they wouldn’t let me wear roller skates during the school parade, so no one knew who I was), and a cheerleader.

Halloween night was so special. My mom would take us out trick-or-treating all around the neighborhood, while my dad stayed at the house and handed out candy. We knew which houses had the scary sounds or creepy things jumping out at you. The sidewalks were filled with kids, families walking together, filling their pillow cases full of candy. It was so much fun, and a cherished memory from my childhood.

Now, as a mom, the fun continues with my own children. My kids start talking about what they want to be in August, but we do not prepare anything, since they often change their minds all the way up to Halloween. We try to have at least part of their costume be homemade, but have found some fun and inexpensive costumes online and from friends.

Halloween is celebrated all month long with trick-or-treating at malls, in neighborhoods, at churches, and schools. Many local organizations provide family-friendly fun such as pumpkin carving, costume contests and parades, games, hayrack rides, non-scary haunted houses, and more. It has become one of the busiest months of the year, with so many activities and events for families to enjoy. We love driving by the houses full of Halloween decorations and spooky sounds, over and over until Halloween.

Visiting a pumpkin patch and picking the perfect pumpkin has become a Fall tradition for many families. Every year, we gather to carve pumpkins or paint them, with all sizes, shapes, and colors to add to the festive atmosphere. With Pinterest, you can find pumpkin carving diagrams, creative homemade costume ideas, Halloween treats and snacks, and fun homemade decorative ideas to help with all of your Halloween planning.

Trick-or-treating on Halloween night is so much fun, walking around the neighborhood seeing our friends and their creative and cute costumes. It brings back so many memories of when I was young, and is a joy to create new memories with my own family.
