This DIY garland is a simple way to add some holiday cheer to your home. You could have your little ones help with this too – finding pinecones, making yarn puff balls, painting letters. There is something really special about making something by hand, and even if you think you aren't crafty, there is no harm in trying! This was a simple project that I did over about 2 hours. Here is what you will need:
- letters to spell out any holiday word (MERRY, LOVE, JOY, CHEERS, etc)
- yarn in mulitple colors (thick, thin or both)
- craft paint or a sharpie
- yarn needle
First I picked all the pinecones off the ground from my neighbors yard (thanks :)) and painted the tips silver, pink and white. Then I painted a different pattern on my message "JOY". I used a sharpie for the "J" and the "O" but needed to paint the "Y". Your patterns don't have to be perfect – they can be colorful, messy or have a hand painted feel to them.
While the letters dried, I made the yarn pom pom balls (tutorial here) in 4 different colors and 4 of each color. My pom poms are messier than the ones in the tutorial above, but remember anything you make yourself doesn't have to be perfect!
Once all the pieces to the garland were done, I laid out the order I wanted it to hang. I then measured the space I wanted to hang the garland then cut my yarn to fit. I started in the middle attaching my letters, pom poms and pinecones.
To attach the letters, I just looped the yarn around each letter. The pinecones were attched by tying a loop of yarn around the tip, and then pom pom balls were attached by threading the yarn needle and sticking it through the center of the ball. Once I worked from the center out, it was done and ready to be hung! I used thumb tacks to secure it to the wall.
I love the way it turned out, and I hope you get some inspiration to make your own holiday garland too!
