It's the last couple weeks of summer here, everyone is getting set to head back to school soon, hopefully including my kid(s). We're not sure on how the whole German kindergarten thing is going to play out yet, but we should have more answers this week as it starts up. I wanted to do one last super summer sensory bin before the season comes to a close, so when I saw Play Create Explore's ice cream dough I knew I had found a winner!

Kids are so different. My boys proclaim to really dislike school. In fact, my older one has gone as far as to say he hates it. It makes me crazy. Their grades don't come close to showing that they don't like school. The older one (for all of his moaning and groaning) has had almost a prefect report card for two years running, and the little one actually asked me a few weeks ago to print out some math sheets to work on before a long car trip.

The best part of waking up is Folgers in your... sensory bin... Okay the rhyme falls short, but we have been having a lot of fun playing with our coffee bin lately! My house has never smelled better and the kids have been enjoying learning about flowers, bugs and construction! I love when I can set up one activity and keep it fresh for a few days with new accessories, it's almost too easy!

Things have been really hard over here lately, grieving from afar for my home church community, dealing with a pre-PMSing three year old, and an unsleeping, aggressive 20 month old has been taking its toll. Jon and I are exhausted, and yet life must go on... I almost feel guilty being so stressed out with my children while there are others who no longer have their babies to hold...

Well, three months has gone by since I had my sweet baby Bastian and I am so filled with love. Becoming a mom has been harder and more rewarding then I could have imagined. All the books, classes, and advice could never have prepared me for what motherhood is truly like.

Well, it turns out that we're not the best travel planners... The USO trip that we had been planning to take this weekend is sold out. Bummer. But, while we may be poor planners this week, we're instead choosing to be spontaneous! The location is still TBD, but we'll be driving and shopping and eating out, and that means we'll still need plenty of tricks to entertain the kids!

Keeping up with our kids and travel theme this week, I was thinking about bringing along one of our quiet time bins. I originally made them up for Aurora to play with during Gray's naptime. She has gradually begun to give up the good ole afternoon nap, so when I saw April's post on Holistic Homemaking I thought that they would work great for our family.

Oh man! Just when I was getting used to lax bed times, sleeping in, sitting in the sun for what seemed like endless hours, and the occasional moans about there being nothing to do, that mailman had to deliver a very solemn reminder that the countdown has officially begun.

The summer newsletter from school arrived in the mail on Monday complete with schedules, procedures, save the dates, and school supply lists. Talk about a wake up call.

We have been experiencing a major heatwave here in Germany these past few weeks. With no air conditioning in our home (or anywhere else in the country) we've been a little obsessed with keeping cool, so we figured what better theme for our sensory bin than the arctic! We played with this bin for several days and ended up remaking it with new materials because it was so much fun!

I don't think any group of friends will every compare to the amazing tribe of women (and Lionel!) that I left back in Hawaii. Hickam AFB was our first duty station and what could have been an intense transition for a new Air Force family with a two week old baby was instead more like an extended vacation where we doubled the size of our extended family! Our Hawaiian friends have truly become a part of our "ohana" and will always have an open invitation in our home.

When it comes to dressing newborns, simple is best. Sure, there are some really adorable "shoes" out there and some irresistible diaper covers...but let's get real, babies poop, pee, and spit up all over those sweet expensive un-necessities. Having just had a baby myself, I know they like to be warm and snug in a comfy outfit. Just because an outfit is practical doesn't mean you have to sacrifice the 'cuteness factor'.

We have tried a lot of different toy management systems over the years including, weekly rotations, taking toys left out away, and of course the "I don't care if the toy room is messy, let's just shut the door and pretend it doesn't exist" method. All of them have their pros and cons, but being the type A, organized person that I am, I've still been trying to come up with a system that met all of our needs.

Designing spaces, especially kid spaces is a serious hobby of mine, so curating my own kids' playroom has been a very enjoyable work of love over the past few weeks. I carried over most of the decor we already had going on in our last home but added a few more special touches that I thought they would really enjoy. We'll hopefully be in this house for at least four years, so I wanted a space for them that would meet the current needs of a 1 and 3 year old, but would also grow with them as they move out of the toddler phase and become more independent.
