Hold the Moment | An Invitation for Mothers to Get in Front of the Camera

Life is so temporary. Baby rolls turn into long-limbed children. Dimples melt away. The sound of their elephant feet running through the house quiets when they leave for college. Faces we wake up with march down their own paths. The doctor calls with a diagnosis. Jobs come and go. Reality hits.

Life is always changing. Sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesn't. But this moment that you're in, it's worth remembering. It's beautiful in all of it's fullness or hardship - in all of its relationships.

Redefining Balance for Motherhood

"So are you working?" my friend asked, on a wintry afternoon two months after my second son was born.

My friend was perched on my couch, between a pile of board books and several toy dump trucks.

A Reading List for Growing Kids

When my oldest was a baby, I used to look at him and think, "This kid and I are going to read so many books together." I'd envision him as a big kid, sitting next to me in hazy sunlight, reading books for hours upon hours, with almost zero interest in athletic activities.

Emotional Tips for a Leisure Trip Without Kids

I just went on a trip. A really, really big (10 day) trip without my kids or my husband. It was wonderful and amazing and a whole bunch of other exaggeratedly positive descriptive words… and it was also a massive source of anxiety for me in the months leading up to it. What were the main things I was worried about? Here, let me list them:

How to Stop the Worry Cycle

After my second son was born I was more anxious for my kids' safety than usual. I blame the postpartum hormones, but maybe part of it was also coming to grips with how random and indifferent the world can feel.

Summertime Musings to My Littles

When Alice was born five years ago, I began to write to her. Just little things; how she looked, how she changed, what she did, how we loved her. Little did I know what a gift it would turn out to be - for both of us, and now for our second, Milo. I can look back and read about all those "little things" that are now worth more than anything and marvel at how quickly I had forgotten them. Luckily for me, “The weakest ink is better than the strongest mind,” or so the Chinese proverb goes.
