Should I be concerned that my child may have been exposed to Tuberculosis?

My son is in the same school as a student who has been diagnosed with tuberculosis. I am concerned that he may have been exposed. What should we watch for?

A case of tuberculosis (commonly called TB) has been recently confirmed in a local high school. In order to get TB, your son would have to have direct contact with someone who has been infected. The TB bacteria are spread through the air when an infected person sneezes, coughs or speaks. You cannot get TB from surface to surface contact.

TB is not easily spread, it takes prolonged and repeated contact. Signs and symptoms which accompany TB include: fever, fatigue, cough, chest pain, drenching chills and weight loss.

I have included more information about TB in my Methodist blog.
