My 9-month-old bites while breastfeeding before bed, what's going on?
I have been breast feeding my son for almost 9 months. We have had our ups and downs, but I have never had to give formula as of yet.
I work full time and pump 4 times a day at work and again before bed, but my supply is getting lower and lower. My daycare provider and husband are very supportive and understand we do not have an endless supply right now.
But to make things even more worrisome my son has stopped wanting to nurse before bed. He fights and cries and BITES! I don't have enough expressed milk to also give him a bottle before bed as I normally only pump 2-3 ounces each time I pump.
Should I start giving him formula before bed? He will take a bottle of breast milk, but as I said I am not pumping enough. He does not seem to wake up in the night hungry and nurses perfectly first thing in the morning. Does he need to have BM/formula before bed to support his growing mind and body? I look forward to any advice and help.

His biting, crying and fighting is telling you that he does not need to breastfeed before he goes to bed. I would encourage you to go with his cues and if you want to empty the breasts before you go to bed, you can pump what is available at this time. Hope that helps and good luck.Read more answers by Dr. Moore
