What medication is safe to take for allergies while breastfeeding?

I am currently breastfeeding my two month daughter, and I have really bad allergies. To make it even worse, I think I have a sinus infection. What type of medicine would you recommend me to take?

Good for you for nursing your 2-month old! Keep it up! Sorry to hear you are battling allergies and a possible sinus infection. Since I am not a doctor, I cannot tell you what medications are safe or unsafe, but I can tell you what the research says or at least lead you to the information so you can read it for yourself. Find the medication that usually works for you, then, before you take it, chose one (or all) of these options:

  • Call me with the name of the medication and I will check my reference book for you.
  • Check your medication with the information on these links www.infantrisk.org or www.naturalstandard.com and discuss your findings with your baby's doctor.
  • Lastly, be cautious when taking meds to help "dry up" your sinuses as they can cause your milk supply to decline too.

When you are feeling better, breastfeeding and your milk supply can return to it's normal state.
