Is Coenzyme Q10 safe to take while breastfeeding? ...

I am breastfeeding my infant and I would like to begin taking the supplement Coenzyme Q10.

Will this be safe for my baby when feeding with my breastmilk?

Thank you for your question. I am glad that you are concerned with your diet while breastfeeding.

Coenzyme Q10, sometimes abbreviated as CoQ10 is sold as a dietary supplement which is not regulated by the FDA. This means that its medicinal benefits have not been proven. This also means that the manufacturing of it is not regulated.

Its other name is Ubiquinone or ubidecarenone. According to Dr. Thomas Hale in Medications and Mother's Milk it is rated as an L3. As such, he states there is no data on levels of ubiquinone in human milk and that most references suggest that pregnant and lactating women should avoid supplements containing this substance.
