It is best to keep your baby near to watch for early feeding cues. Early feedings cues are a good sign your baby is hungry and ready to go to the breast.

Baby's will cue to breastfeed and eat anywhere from 8-12 times in a day. Early feeding cues include making licking or sucking motions, sucking on hands or fists or even bobbing their head against your neck or shoulder.

Once you see these early feeding cues, place your baby to the breast to feed. Crying is a late hunger sign and can make it difficult to latch a "hangry" baby.

If your baby has started to cry, try some skin to skin and calming your baby before attempting to latch.
