Should I use distilled water to make formula?

I am going to formula feed my newborn daughter. What type of water should I use to mix her powdered formula? Distilled? Purified? Boiled? Or is tap water safe to use?

I tell my new parents that are formula feeding their babies that tap water is fine to use to make their bottles.

The World Health Organization also offers the following guidelines for safely preparing powdered infant formula:

  • Washing your hands with soap and water
  • Cleaning all feeding equipment in hot, soapy water
  • Preparing enough formula for just one feeding at a time.
